Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the Bureau of Sanitation 2012 "Discover Recycling" Open Houses!

Families, children and residents of all ages get a chance to meet Sanitation collection truck drivers and staff, enjoy truck demonstrations and facility tours as well as receive information about recycling and a host of Sanitation services.

Free Used Tire Collection at the Open Houses!

Used tire collections will be held in conjunction with the Open Houses. Funded by a CalRecycle grant generated from the tire fee on each new tire sold in California, the grant supports the city’s ongoing collection program that allows city residents to recycle up to four tires per year free at any of the six district yards. Million Trees L.A. Bring Tree Adoptions to the Sanitation Open Houses!

Million Trees L.A. will again partner with the Bureau of Sanitation and have available 200 (5-gallon) trees for adoption at each of Sanitation's 'Discover Recycling' Open Houses.

The free tree adoption opportunities will include fruit and non-fruit trees depending on their availability at the time of each event. All tree adoptions will be provided on a first come, first serve basis with city residency verification, while supplies last. The limit is one tree for each property address in the City of Los Angeles.

To adopt a free tree, individuals must live and/or own property within the City of Los Angeles. Tree adoptions are subject to verification with a driver's licence and/or DWP bill.

New Location for South L.A. District Yard Open House on Saturday, June 11!

A new location has been selected for the South L.A. District Yard Open House! We're moving the event closer to residents in South L.A. and will host the Open House near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at The Expo Center.

Please note the change in venue!

An incredible turnout for reducing, reusing and recycling in the City of Los Angeles!

Families with children and residents visited Sanitation's West Los Angeles District Yard by the hundreds for the chance to meet with truck operators and learn how the city collects and removes its trash, recyclables and yard trimmings.

A favorite among parents and children, Mr. Recycle gave high fives for recycling and received lots of attention and appreciation!

Ahoy! San Pedro Area Recyclers Blazed a Glorious Path to Reducing, Reusing and Recycling!

The Blue Recycling Bin display reminds residents they can recycle a treasure trove of clean Glass, Paper & Cardboard, Metals, and Styrofoam® & other expanded Polystyrene.

City staff give back with volunteer time to the community to share information about the services available through the Bureau of Sanitation.

Many residents were glad to learn that the Bulky Item Collection Program offers residents free curbside pickup of such items as mattresses, sofas, chairs, and other furniture! Residents were also exicted to learn that e-waste like large televisions and monitors as well as white goods like refrigerators, water heaters, washers and dryers can be picked up also! How great is that!

City volunteers teach a sense of personal responsibility through hands-on learning and illustrate the chasing arrows of recycling through the giveaway of mulch and small plants. Residents learn that the Green Bin collection of yard trimmings are used to produce mulch and compost, which then is used to grow new plants, help maintain soil moisture and conserve water. Recycling is that awesome!

Full Throttle Recycling at the South L.A. Open House with Rob Dyrdek!

Board of Public Works President Cynthia M. Ruiz, Sanitation Director Enrique C. Zaldivar and South L.A. District Yard Superintendent Jonathan Polk toured the trucks and spoke about the city's recycling programs with Rob Dyrdek.

Families learned about various tree species and the opportunity to adopt trees for their homes as part of the Million Trees LA Initiative. Visitors also learned how trees provide shade and save energy costs, clean the air and help reduce greenhouse gases, and add beauty to property and city neighborhoods.

Solid Resources Citywide Recycling Acting Division Manager Karen Coca and Senior Environmental Engineer John Moore speak with visitors about the city's recycling programs and the goal to achieve a 70-percent diversion rate by the year 2013.

The FOG (Fats, Oils and Grease) Control Program provided information and household containers to help reduce sanitary sewer overflows caused by blockages resulting from fats, oils and grease accumulation in sewer lines. Visitors were interested to learn about the affects of FOG and happy to learn how to reduce blockages.

The Mulch Giveaway Program, which recycles residential yard and tree trimmings, produces mulch and compost for residents to use in their gardens and landscapes. Open House visitors had the opportunity to learn about the city's green bin recycling program, pot a plant and take home mulch.

Recycling for Life in Cypress Park!

Vactor trucks clean storm drains and sewers with its vacuum powered nozzle. It sucks up trash and debris with enough power to lift a bowling ball!

Trash trucks can grab the blue recycling bin with automatic arms and lifts the bin high in the air to slide the recycleable into the hopper of truck. The truck rocks and rolls every time it lifts another bin! Way too cool!

Each visitor is given a vegetable plant and bags of mulch and compost, from the city's green waste program, to start their own vegetable garden. The plants are given away until the supply is gone!

Bureau of Sanitation staff emphasize to Open House visitors the value of mulch, compost and home vegetable gardens have on protecting the environment. Besides its value, home vegetable gardens reduce pollution and help to protect the legacy of a healthy earth for future generations.

Recycling Rocks in Northridge!

For the first time, residents bring used tires to the Open Houses to have them recycled!

Kids LOVE to learn about trash trucks and the work of collection operators.

Recycling education is awesome!

Tomato plants and mulch, from the city's green bins and yard trimmings collection program, teaches a broader perspective on recycling.
